Why We Should Read Kafka?

Introduction

Franz Kafka was a Czech novelist who wrote in German. He is considered to be one the greatest novelists of the 20th century. His notable works include The Metamorphosis, The Trial and The Castle.

Life of Franz Kafka

Born in a Jewish Family on 3 July, 1883 in Prague, he was not his father's favorite boy. His relationship with his father was not a bright one. Franz tried to tell his father several times by his letters of how his presence has affected his life. How he had influenced him for the worst and never gave him a chance to justify himself. But he couldn’t gather up the courage to send the letter.  Franz was born a meek and a weak kid and suffered various problems during his life. He had several unsuccessful relationships with women though he got engaged, all these events shaped his literary career. He started writing at a very young age though particularly he didn't attach much value to his work. His works disgusted him. He worked at an insurance company for nearly a year but left it to join a writing firm. He was never married and he was always frustrated with himself. He even wrote his friend Max Brod to burn all this books and manuscripts and not to publish them. Kafka died young at the age of 40.

The Kafkaesque

The Kafkaesque is a term which was introduced by Franz Kafka. It describes the concepts and situations similar to his literary works. It depicts a situation where the protagonist or the central character is utterly helpless under the power of bureaucratic governments and totalitarian regimes. The character is lost in a maze or sort of a labyrinth and lack clear course of action in their lives. It mainly deals with the ideas of Existentialism with a nightmarish reality.

The Metamorphosis

This novel is greatly influenced by Kafka's own life. The situations he faced with his life, with his intimidating father are similar to the protagonist Gregor Samsa. Samsa wakes up one morning and finds himself transformed into a disgusting loathsome creature. His family betrays him and try to get rid of him. A nightmare in the truest sense.

The Trial

The extent of powers the Bureaucratic governments and Totalitarian states possess are endless. Here K. finds himself getting arrested for no reason and is soon allowed to stand trial. He finds himself totally helpless under the mysterious court and goes in search for finding answers.

The Castle

"By the authority of the castle, you are ordered to leave this place immediately". A small village run by the Castle and it's members who refuse to come out of the shadows. A mysterious novel full of suspense and the lack of decisions we can make in our lives under a such a powerful force as the Castle.

Kafka's works still continue to influence societies or people all together. The inescapable fate of our lives, the work, the corrupted governments and the meaningless existence of our lives are all what Kafka teaches us. We are all  characters of a Kafkaesque world.

Can education be considered as an instrument of social change?

The role of education as an agent or instrument of social change and social development is widely recognized today. Social change may take place – when humans need change, when the existing social system or network of social institutions fails to meet the existing human needs and when new materials suggest better ways of meeting human needs.

According to Maclver, social change takes place as a response to many types of changes that take place in the social and nonsocial environment. Education can initiate social changes by bringing about a change in outlook and attitude of man. It can bring about a change in the pattern of social relationships and thereby it may cause social changes.

Earlier educational institutions and teachers used to show a specific way of life to the students and education was more a means of social control than an instrument of social change. Modern educational institutions do not place much emphasis upon transmitting a way of life to the students. The traditional education was meant for an unchanging static society not marked by any change. But today education aims at imparting knowledge. Education was associated with religion.

It has become secular today. It is an independent institution now. Education has been chiefly instrumental in preparing the way for the development of science and technology. Education has brought about phenomenal changes in every aspect of men’s life. Francis J.Brown remarks that education is a process which brings about changes in the behavior of society. It is a process which enables every individual to effectively participate in the activities of society and to make positive contribution to the progress of society.

Education has become one of the influential instruments of social change in India. It has led to the mobilization of people’s aspirations for development and change. Thus in modern complex national societies, education can neither be regarded as a controlling neither force conserving cultural heritage, nor could it be viewed as an agent of social change. It can only be regarded as a cooperative force in bringing about social changes decided by the forces possessing more pervasive power in society.

Education has been accepted as one major agency of socialization, and teachers and educational institutions as socializing agents. In describing education as an instrument of social change, three things are important: the agents of change, the content of change, and the social background of those who are sought to be changed, i.e. students. Educational institutions under the control of different cultural groups reflect the values of those groups which support and control education. In this situation, teachers Impart specific values, aspirations and to the children. Social reformers, who were educated emphasized values like removal of caste restrictions, equality of women, doing away with social evil social customs and practices, voice in the governance of the country, establishing democratic institutions and so on. They, thus, wanted to teach liberal philosophy through education for changing society. In other words they regarded education as a flame or light of knowledge which dispelled the darkness of ignorance.

 The use of education for spreading the values of modernization came to be emphasized from the 1960s and 1970s onwards. Highly productive economies, distributive justice, people‟s participation in decision-making bodies, adoption of scientific technology in industry, agriculture and other occupations and professions were accepted as goals for modernizing the Indian society. And these goals were to be achieved through liberal education. Thus, modernization was not accepted as a philosophy or a movement based on rational values system but as a process that was to be confined only to economic field but was to be achieved in social, political, cultural and religious fields too. Education was sought to be utilized as channel for the spread of modernity.

 According to the sociological perspective, education does not arise in response of the individual needs of the individual, but it arises out of the needs of the society of which the individual is a member. The educational system of any society is related to its total social system. It is a sub system performing certain functions for the on-going social system. The goals and needs of the total social system get reflected in the functions it lays down for educational system and the form in which it structures it to fulfill those functions.

In a static society, the main function of the educational system is to transmit the cultural heritage to the new generations. But in a changing society, these keep on changing from generation to generation and the educational system in such a society must not only transmit the cultural heritage, but also aid in preparing the young for adjustment to any changes in them that may have occurred or are likely to occur in future. In contemporary societies, “The proportion of change that is either planned or issues from the secondary consequences of deliberate innovations is much higher than in former times.” This is more so in societies that has newly become independent and are in a developing stage. Consequently, in such modern complex societies, education is called upon to perform an additional function of becoming

Thus, the relationship between educational system and society is mutual; sometimes the society influences changes in educational system and at other times the educational system influences changes in the society.

The Merchant of Venice

Does ‘The Merchant of Venice’ only celebrate the protagonists and belittle the antagonist like in all the cliché stories? Or does one have to read between the lines?

The plot of the brilliantly written tale goes like this:

To entice Portia, a wealthy Venetian heiress, a young Venetian, Bassanio, needs a loan of three thousand. He approaches his friend Antonio, who is a merchant. Antonio is short of money because all his capital is already invested in his fleet, which is currently at sea. He goes to a Jewish money lender, Shylock, who despises Antonio (rightly so?) because of Antonio’s stereotypes and demeaning behaviour towards him.

Nonetheless, Shylock decides to give the short-term loan because of Antonio’s insistence, but, in a moment of dark humour, he makes an absurd and cruel condition if the loan isn’t repaid within three months, Shylock would carve a pound of flesh from Antonio, from any part of his body. Antonio agrees, in good humour and mockery, certain that his ships will return pretty soon.

The parallel plotline follows the tale of Portia, who has to choose a suitor for herself. In order to suffice of the terms of Portia’s father’s will, all suitors must choose from among three caskets (silver, gold and lead), one of which contains a portrait of her. If he chooses the correct portrait, he may marry Portia, but if doesn’t he must vow never to marry or court another woman. The Princes of Morocco and Arragon fail the test, to the joy of Portia, and are instantly rejected. As Bassanio prepares to travel for the test, his friend Lorenzo elopes with Shylock’s daughter, Jessica. Bassanio , the final suitor, chooses the lead casket, which contains her picture, and Portia happily agrees to marry him immediately.

Meanwhile, two of Antonio’s ships get ravaged and Antonio’s creditors are insisting him to clear his debts. Bassanio hears of Antonio’s quandary, and he dashes back to Venice, leaving Portia behind. Portia follows him, accompanied by her maid, Nerissa. They are disguised as a male lawyer and his clerk. An infuriated Shylock takes the cast to the court. When Bassanio reaches on the date for the repayment to Shylock has passed and Shylock is demanding his pound of flesh. Even when Bassanio offers a greater amount as repayment, Shylock, now aggravated by the news of elopement of his daughter, is determined on seeking revenge on Antonio. The diplomatic Duke refuses to intrude into the matter.

Portia arrives to save Antonio, in her disguise. After being given the power of judgment by the Duke, Portia states wittily that the agreement was only about a pound of flesh and hence he cannot shed  a single drop of blood from Antonio’s body as it is against the law to shed a Christian’s blood. Since it is evident that to carve a pound of flesh would kill Antonio, Shylock is denied his suit. Moreover, for conspiring to murder a Venetian citizen, Portia orders that he should forfeit all his wealth. Half is to go to Venice, and half to Antonio.

Antonio gives his half back to Shylock on the condition that Shylock bestows it to his disowned daughter, Jessica.  His terms also specify that, Shylock must also convert to Christianity. A broken Shylock accepts. News arrives that Antonio’s remaining ships have returned safely. With the exception of Shylock, all celebrate a happy ending to the entire episode.

Yet one theme which has been argued over since time immemorial is the disposition of Shylock, the Jew.

The Merchant of Venice, one of the most popular plays of the William Shakespeare portrays Shylock as an antagonist. His evil disposition is highlighted throughout the classic. However, he is presented as a tragic character, representing the persecution of Jews in Elizabethan times. His character highlights how deprivation and oppression carves a deep impact on a person.

During the Victorian times, the Jews in Venice faced deprivation of rights. Along with that, they were treated with mockery, disgust and were merely ‘tolerated’ in Venice for their wealth. They were landless and subjected to confinement.  The Jews earned a living by usury and made great profits out of it as well. They were stereotyped and often insulted by the Christians and seen to hold a lower section in the society.

Shylock’s character highlights how vengeful a person tends to become because of being discriminated. He tries to seek revenge on Antonio, who spat on him and called him a dog because of his business. Shylock’s anguish for Antonio is clearly expressed in the monologue. This reflects how Antonio’s stereotypical and inhumane treatment affected him and created dark shades in his character.

Although, Shylock’s prime character trait shows him as nefarious, he is presented as a tragic character that represents the persecution and pitiful condition of the Jews in Elizabethan times.

This widely famous monologue portrays Shylock’s anguish regarding his treatment by Antonio. Him pointing out the specific disrespectful acts of Antonio which caused him embarrassment display his aversion. He was treated with mockery and seen to be inferior and his living means, that is usury, was seen as ‘unholy’ in Christian eyes.

The monologue:

“To bait fish withal. If it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me and hindered me half a million, laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies—and what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute—and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.”

Not only stereotypes, the end of the story also shows how Shylock is forcefully made to convert to Christianity, clearly putting light on the idea of religious chauvinism and superiority. Hence, it really is a matter of subjective interpretation to say who really the ‘villain’ in this tale was. 

What's Blogging?

Being a Computer Science students many a time I come across this question.... "Why are you in writing? You should be concentrating more on coding skills." During my early blogging days, I used to get really frustrated and depressed on hearing the same question again and again and replying to it monotonously. But gradually as I picked up pace and confidence I became more comfortable with the notion, now I can easily answer anyone why I am doing writing and blogging.

What is actually Blogging:

For me, a blog is a personal workspace where you present your work so that others may see it. Work can be anything be it writing, drawing, speaking, editing, painting, etc. Blogging is for personal interest and zeal, many platforms like Blogger, WordPress, YouQuote, Mirarkee, etc are providing workspace for showcasing the latent blogging talent.

Requirements to be a Blogger:

There is no such set of prescribed qualities or requirements which one should fulfill in order to begin blogging career. Almost 70% of people indulged in blogging are personal bloggers who are blogging just for fun and leisure purposes, this set of people just need a desire to showcase the talent and nothing else whereas other 30% are professional bloggers, the people who take blogging as a career and live on it. Professional Bloggers must have a good command over the talent and a good audience too.

Blogging for everybody:

As already stated there are no rules for blogging, anyone be it a school going boy or a retired person everyone can blog, personally it is a constructive way to utilize leisure time. Blogging world is really a huge place one can learn almost everything here. There are some great people who are always ready to lend a helping hand and motivate. I am personally interested in Literature field, I started blogging somewhere in April last year and from then I have multiplied my skills and vocabulary by many folds. I have personally known many of my fellow writers too. Blogging is one such place where criticism is also sweet, people will not criticise they will improve your writing.

Why am I doing Blogging:

Franky speaking, I never thought of blogging it was one sudden day that blogging came across my mind and one of my friends helped me to understand this world and made me comfortable with it. Then I started expressing my feeling and managed to get some audience too. They motivated and inspired me to write more and more. 

I am just enhancing my skills to fit in all fields be it of content writing, copywriting or editing, in computer science itself one needs to be a good content writer if he/she wants to develop a good UI and bound the audience together. We people need to be best if we want our product to be successful, making appealing statements is necessary of selling the product. 

Writing can simply gain you some XP's and an edge over other conventional coders. I am in no way saying that just writing would make you successful, obviously, you need to be good at coding too. I am managing both the skills fairly well, for now, let's hope for brighter future.

Conclusion:

At last, I can suggest and motivate you to try blogging and gain some edge over conventional competitors, almost all field requires people who can write well, so in my personal opinion you can never end up in dark. You just need to keep the skills sharp and rock with words. 

 

The Yardstick

 How are things quantified? How do we know the value of a kilogram of sugar? How do we arrive upon the conclusion as to whether the distance to be travelled is too far or not? It done by the virtue of yardsticks. The Americans measure distance in miles while we do so in kilometers. However, in the end, both parties are able to effectively arrive at a conclusion based on the quantity measured. The effective distance or the mass of the object isn't going to change regardless of whether it is measured in miles or kilometers or pounds or kilograms. Now, this isn't some introductory note to some class on Physics. This is just a clarification that the characteristic feature of an object doesn't change based on the yardstick we use to measure it.

Now we move on to the realm of beings whose origin story itself is highly conflicted. Whether, these beings evolved from monkeys or whether they were crafted by the “All-Knowing One Above” is something that is still debated upon. Now we are different from objects mentioned earlier. We are made of organic entities called cells. As you’re reading this, millions of bio-chemical connections are being formed in your brain which the average human terms as “thoughts”. Our characteristics won’t remain same with the changing yardstick of measurement.

Being societal beings, we are constantly under the pressure to do a lot of things. We were never given a chance to contemplate upon the reasons for doing many of these things. We walk around clothed. None of us came into the world with the notion that covering one’s nudity was a necessity. But somehow, we ended up being clothed. Now, please don’t blame Eve for that. Similarly, we were never given a proper reason behind attending school. Everyone was doing it. So we just followed the same suit.

As the years passed by, I began to question the very essence of schooling. The existence of an institution which measures its students with the yardstick of marks (mere numbers) seemed too minimalistic to be plausible. If that was the case, then the topper must have had life easy in front of him and the supposed “dunce” must be destined for failure. But, upon close probing, that wasn’t the case. The revered topper, who was believed to be at the pinnacle of success, then tumbles down to get caught up in a rat race. The dropouts, often free from the bondages of being reduced to a mere rank or number often go around creating ripples in the society which may be in the form of a start-up that our topper friends probably dream of getting into. Now, as I mentioned earlier, the “dunce” isn’t an actual dunce. He just couldn't cope up with a system that merely reduced him to marks. He had a brain capable of generating ideas that could possibly change the world as we know it. Similarly, we get to see that the topper was actually an entity accustomed to the system.

When subjected to the real life where intelligence isn’t measured by the yardstick of marks, the topper fumbled. It was only then, it dawned upon him that intelligence, in fact, was a spectrum that was a mix of academic, experiences and most of all, the ability of being street smart and in tune with the happenings around him. The topper can’t be blamed for his obliviousness towards the system. After all, he was just a kid stepping into real life. So now we move on to the question as to who is to be blamed. The institution of course, and its idea that its yardstick of measurement was accurate when it was not even close.

I am often fascinated by the things my parents are capable of doing. They are not even close when compared based on marks. But the amount of skills they’ve accumulated over the years is something that never ceases to amaze me. It’s not that my parents are special in any manner. They were subjected to a different education system that didn’t consider marks of utmost importance. They were taught to value experience along with the various modules on their subject. As I just began with my college life, wherein you are responsible for everything starting from your nutrition to your academics, I realized how faulty our yardsticks were. Being the fairly academic student didn’t give me an edge when it came to money management. Being the fairly academic student didn’t give me an upper edge when it came to finding good places to eat or washing my clothes properly.

Hence, it is high time we changed the yardsticks of measurement. As the Internet claims that Albert Einstein said, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” 

Bhaiya Ji smile please!!!

For all people who are already Bewildered by the title of the post don't run away or lose the momentum... Here, It is the meaning of the title is "Hey you, Smile please!" Okay I know many of you can easily make out that this is not the literal meaning of the phrase but still to make it sound interesting I moulded it like this... You only think, how it will feel if it was translated literally... I would go like this "Respected Brother Smile, please!" Isn't it humorously racist... Well, Sister's can also smile :p...


Okay without any further ado...Let me start with the main part...
In this modern and hectic life with so many important daily tasks, no one can expect from anyone to remember everything. Personally, I find it difficult even to take some out to glance at daily news too... Preoccupied in this sedentary lifestyle it is next to impossible to read a newspaper too...

So what happened today was, I was in class attending a boring lecture which almost all Engineering students have to attend :p... Just after the lecture I took out my phone and opened Cortana( people don't kill me I am from Earth only I am not an alien species)...
So I started "Hey! Cortana tell me some interesting fact..." 
To which she replied," Hey! Utkarsh here is a fact".

Well, I started at first... What today is Smile Day? Why on the Earth would someone need a day to smile? Come on it's just a smile...  We don't need a day to smile... Do we need?
Above question pestered me for a long time, just because of this I am late on posting this post (Sorry to blame, I need to be clean on my path :p...)
Thinking for a long time, I ended upon this conclusion....

How much we smile in a day? Are we living up to the mark? Are we enjoying

A smile can do wonders... Ask childrens, Why are they so carefree? Just because they smile and laugh all day.... They enjoy every moment...

What is a smile? Ask your society security guard or your maid... Just with our smile, they feel contained and satisfied with all the efforts they put for your betterment.

What a smile means? Ask vegetable vendors, they happily greet you every time you visit them not just because you shop there or you pay them...

A smile worth more than a million dollars!!!

Have you ever observed your mother smiling all day at you just to relieve you, to make you happy, to make you feel good... Believe me, mother's do more tedious work as compared to us, then also she smiles all day... There is no specific day for them as such as to smile they smile all day around... The aura of a house is maintained just by a smile!

I just want you all to enjoy each day! Smile every day... Try smiling at any random person, believe me, it feels nice to other person more than you...

Your one smile can even make someone's day!

Smile every day... Live life to the fullest... Enjoy every moment... Be joyous and cheerful... Sleep with a smile on your face and get up with a smile too...

"I Love You!"- A slang?

How many days we have been together?-asked the girl. To which boy promptly replied," Technically it's been a week we started chatting! but I feel like we have known each other for millenniums, It seems you are the only one for whom my heart longed for... Shall I say you those Golden Words?"--- Seriously? I mean seriously how can someone be so cheezy just after a week? How come someone says so much caramelised sentences? Isn't this weird?

To which the girl replied,"Are you sure you want to do this? I mean it is only a week, why don't we take time to say those words? You seem to be in a hurry boy... take it easy or else you will fall on your face."--- The girl seemed to be enjoying his company. She is being diplomatic as well as moved by the boy's guts and excitement.


Okay, okay!!! This was an old-school modern story now allow me to take command and elaborate something relevant to my topic...After spending few more days together both proposed each other by exchanging those so-called "Magical, Heavenly, Holy Words", I Love you!"

Now let the story unfold... As every Millenial story twist arrives as expected, both faced "compatibility issues!", claimed that their partner's behaviour is not same as before, "Lack of Interest!", etc,etc... "I think we don't Love each other anymore!!!"...

According to a survey, Almost every second Millineal faces such problems. It seems like we are lacking interest in each other, there are no strong feelings, no strong bonding, no strings attached...
Personally, What I feel is The Expression of Love have evolved merely into a Word! The old principles catering to fundamentals of Love no longer proves to be valid. All those years long heritage seems to be irrelevant to us fast lovers. Seriously, living in a high-speed world we people expect everything to be high-speed! Isn't it wrong? Come on accept it! I know most of us will agree with the fact but then also will try to ignore the scenario and consequences too.

So as to speak we are SOCIAL but there is no SOCIALITY left in us. We make up everything as either a MEME or SARCASM! Even people are taking Love as slangs...You may not be amused to know that a person who said" I Love You" yesterday, was someone you would never meet again or maybe that person could be hanging out with another individual.

It is very depressing as well as humiliating to face this bitter truth of our generation... We people are so-called advanced, enthusiast, technocrats but in reality, we are coward... Fearing to commit, fearing to live rest of the life with a particular individual... What I think is that we have advanced technology just in developing Slangs and memes, and not any feelings or commitments.

The life forward would be biting and steep if recent trend is not changed. Love should again be nurtured with its true feelings and motive... "It is very easy to break something but the real person is the one who mends things!"... In the end, I would like to leave you with a question  "Is I Love you! A slang in today's context?" or "Is Love being materialised justified by recent technological advancements?" 

Suicide! Not an option for me!

This is my small step towards making the world Suicide free... As we can see every now and then news flashes of someone committing a serious crime(YES a crime!  taking life is a crime be it of self)...I have a simple citation to escape this 

"If you cannot give life to yourself, then how can you take your life?" 

This is a conversation between some friends from the so-called suicide capital of India "Kota" on the eve of World Suicide Prevention Day...(10th of September).

Vishu: Yes! So what’s so special about it?

Vishu: Oh! yes! Today is the day when Osama must have made the final adjustments for executing 9/11…

Neelu: You morons! Today is World Suicide Prevention Day …

Vishu and Vishal: Oh! What’s this day?  Never came across such day before….

Neelu: (Glancing at Wikipedia) World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), collaborates with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health, to host World Suicide Prevention Day. In 2011 an estimated 40 countries held awareness events to mark the occasion.The United Nations issued ‘National Policy for Suicide Prevention’ in the 1990s which some countries use as a basis for their suicide policies.

Vishu: The stats are too threatening… I am afraid of all these.

Vishal: How could one be so coward to give away his/her life so easily. One must consider all the aspects before taking such steps…

Neelu: As we all know, we all are interdependent on each other, it creates lots of problems even if one of us is missing!!!

Vishal: How would parents feel to lose their child at such a tender age just because of stress due to exams? It’s really depressing !!!

Vishu: Yes! you guys are right one should not give away his/her life just because of problems… I mean who doesn’t have problems in their life? No one is perfect… All suffer from problems!

Vishal: No must need to get over all these problems. I cannot imagine leaving my family and friends alone and giving away my life just to be free…

Neelu: Friend on this auspicious occasion let us sign a pact? What you suggest?

Vishu and Vishal: Pact? About what?

Neelu: The pact goes like this …(speak with me)

"Whatsoever is the situation,
 We won’t ever consider Suicide as an option.
 We will try harder and won’t be coward,
 We live once and will enjoy it till death!!!"

(All of them and other people on that day pledged to be suicide free… Till now the plan is working fine.. let’s hope for the best in future too…)
