“But in the end one needs more courage to live than to kill himself.” ―Albert Camus
Suicide is the third leading cause of death of individuals worldwide. There has been an increase in the rates of suicide in India over the years, although trends of both increases and decline in suicide rates have been present. Statistics shows that currently suicide rates are among individuals of age group 10-25. In absolute numbers, in 2013, 3,594 adolescents in the 10-14 age group, 23,748 in the 15-19 age group and 35,618 in the 20-24 age group killed themselves in India. People today face new challenges, including rising levels of obesity, mental health disorders and high unemployment. People commit suicide when they feel that the pain of death is far better than facing the harsh reality of everyday life. These feelings of depression may be due to loss of loved ones, failure in life, immense stress from society, burdens from debt, peer pressure…etc. However even though suicide might seem to be better alternative at the time, committing suicide is a against the law and a crime. Also, it is not morally justifiable. The definition given for suicide is: An act is a suicide if and only if one intentionally terminates one’s own life, no matter what the conditions or precise nature of the intention or the causal route to death. A man who commits suicide violates the natural law principle that man's nature is to continue his existence and by doing so he refuses his moral duty to keep acting with this nature. Committing suicide also violates man's duty to god as life is a gift given to us by God, man is obligated to him to live even though the destination of the journey may seem unclear or troublesome at the time. God alone is the ultimate owner of life and he alone has the right to take away. By committing suicide, one denies his towards community as it brings harm to the community in some way or the other. A person’s existence depends on his as well as other lives in the system. The life of a person is like a book for others to learn from. A person’s desire to live amidst pain, boredom, suffering and despair is a moral lesson to others in the community on how to face life despite hurdles and challenges. By giving into suicide it denies the community of such experiences and depicts disturbing and unhelpful memories of the dead person which in turn will hurt others who attempt to live their lives with such struggles in the community. And also, a person who commit suicide fails to perform his duties thus causing suffering to not only to himself but also his loved ones thus causing them pain that they do not deserve. Also in another perspective suicide is equivalent to murder only that it is inflicted upon oneself. Life doesn't truly belong to man entirely rather more like it has been loaned to him and his job is to try to make and leave the world a better place than he found it to be. But committing suicide just makes the world an uglier place for everyone. The act itself is violent and contagious. A person who commit suicide begins a Chain Reaction which influences other people's lives in unthinkable ways and may also lead other people into thinking that suicide is a better alternative and kill themselves as well. It is an extremely selfish and cowardly act made without consideration of the consequences. Ultimately the conclusion is that there is no problem or reason in this world great enough for one to consider suicide. More like you have no right to it!
