This article is aimed at those parts of the Indian Education system that are obviously unnecessary and could be scrapped with, but still continue. These are strictly my own views, and views might vary from person to person. But one thing no one can deny. Sometimes these can be damn displeasing to the students( I am a student. I know).
1) First up in this list is the system of essays. In the school i studied, they used to give us pre-announced essays that we had to write in exams. It was sure that the essay to be given in exam would be done so from these four or five announced ones. Students just crammed these essays and vomited these contents in the exam hall. This makes one question: What were those essays exactly for? Were not they for raising creativity and language awareness in the student? if the essays, or emails, or letter, whatever are announced beforehand, it is natural for the teachers to compose these for the students, and in thew process, the student learn nothing.
2)Practical Notebooks: Writing of practical Notebooks is the most useless exercise I have ever done. The teachers do not even look at the notebooks properly. A year's worth of noting and writing gets thrown to a pile of other notebooks, without anybody batting an eye. The amount of time that goes in 'copying' these notebooks is astonishing. It wastes the student's time in which he or she could've learned a valuable skill and destroys opportunities. An dirony is that, there is nothing practical about writing these notebooks.
3)Anybody of you ever done PE? The school in which i did it was utter disaster. There were no fit instructors to set an example, and no standardised drills. During exam time, they were never conducted properly, and a few well placed buttering by the parents and the students usually fetched marks. This is probably not the case in posh private or government schools, but the sad reality i have seen is that most 'normal' schools have this trend.
4)Lastly, I would like to talk about infrastructure. The infrastructure in most of the school sin India is old and faulty. My own school had 22 computers, out of which three worked. My entire schools life, i have never seen a single computer getting repaired, or changed. The OS was still Windows XP. I will bet that almost all local unreputed schools that represent general Indian education are in this state.
We cannot do away with iot if we don't stand as a community. We need to stand up and see to it that every member of our community gets the same educational qualities, regardless of birth, or richness. Only then can we hope to progress as a nation.
