We all learn History through various channels like Schools, Books, popular talk with friends, society, evasedropping strangers subconsciously, and many other ways. But do we realise thst a lot of these inputs are just rumors and have no factual basis? This list of commonly misinterpret historical facts will get you to verify the facts next time.
1) Einstein failed at math: Truth is, Einstein did fail his Undergrad college exams, but never in maths or alike scientific subjects. He was quite brilliant in it an had completed advanced differential and integral calculus by the time he was 15.
2)Columbus discovered America: Not going into the age old conjecture that, 'Yes, i know America was there before Columbus saw it', I would go further and stress that he was not the first European to land in America. He did not even land in mainland North America, just some islands of West Indies. He did not even know where he was and kept thinking it was some route to Asia that he discovered.
3)Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity: Electricity was a known phenomenon in his time and Franklin did not discover electricity. Though he coined many useful terms and concepts regarding electricity that we use today, including assigning positive and negative charges to bodies.
4)Lincoln fought the civil war to end slavery: Though popular sources say otherwise, Lincoln did not fight the civil war just to end slavery. Yes, the civil war caused slavery to end, but it was just a side effect. Actually, the confederate states were attempting to sign off from USA, while Lincoln wanted unified America. Though letters prove that :Lincoln was a strong opposer of slavery, the civil war was not fought with the sole purpose of ending slavery.
5)The vedic Aryans came from outside India: Though popularized by British Historians, modern Archaeologists are reluctant to agree to the fact that the ancient Indians were foreigners. Many new and modern historians also feel otherwise. Similarly, some new sources also point to the fact that our facts and figures relating to other facets of Indian History are also wrong.
6) Taj Mahal was not probably made by Shah Jahan, but captured by him from a local ruler. Ashwin Shanghi, an Indian writer has written a novel, "The Krishna Key" that talks about this. There are also rumors that further down the shore of Jamuna, Shah Jahan attempted to build another Taj Mahal, but failed to do so.
7)Marie Antoinette saying, 'Let them eat cake': There is a very popular saying that the beautiful and charming French Queen taunted the Drought striken peasants who could not get bred, by advising them that they should eat cake. However, this saying is completely false, because she was a mere toddler at that time. The reference came from a novel called "confessions" by Rousseau. Similarly, the notion of Caesar saying "Et Tu, Brute", came from Shakespeare.
