How to not be boring

One of the fears that we encounter in our daily lives is the fear of being boring. Everyday we go around our lives trying to please others so that we don’t come off as boring. The truth is that nobody is actually quite boring.

The reason we come off as boring is because of the lack of ability to communicate effectively with the other person. Nobody is born inherently boring and neither are we.

When William Wordsworth found the valley of the daffodils, the simple daffodils brought an inspiration to him to write a poetry which became a masterpiece but which others may have thought as boring. Most of 18th and 19th century art masterpieces were simple artistic works which seemed boring such as dull portraits of a tree, or a riverbank. Just like there is no such thing as a boring tree, a boring sky or a boring riverbank similarly there is no such thing as a boring person.

The interesting person doesn't generally fall in the way of interesting things that happen to them on a frequent basis. They do not attend special meetings or do things differently. They just know how to communicate in a way that makes them interesting.

We fail to realise that our feelings are the most interesting things that we posses with us. Instead of talking about our deepest feelings and emotions we touch only the surface topics such a the weather, how we were late for the movie or how we will celebrate our 21st birthday. We do not express the moment of guilt that we felt, the love and desire that we experienced.

That's why children are never boring. Their youth and their inexperience of the world allows them to talk and express freely about anything they feel. As we grow up, we become more introverted and focus more on ourselves than the outside world.

Even if we do express our feelings and emotions freely like a child, we may feel we are boring because we do not know the other person very well. The solution is to not think about being boring and focus on the direction of our conversation and always being honest about what we say. After continuous practice we will start to feel more socially alive.
