Zoology as a career option

Zoology-Studies and Career.

Zoology as a subject is inclusive of studies about animal sciences. However when someone pursues it as course, that is Bsc or Msc Zoology(hons.), the course comprises of wide array of disciplines connected to life sciences such as embryology, biotechnology , genetics, ecology, molecular and cell biology and much more. The curriculum has all the syllabi related to zoological phenomena from micro to macro level.

Zoology has always been very interesting to me. Nature is fascinating.’
              -Nicolas Cage, Hollywood Actor.
It is not that after zoology , you end being a zoo-keeper, though you can if you want to.
The need of this subject is a vital one . Every research in life sciences from Genomics to Medicine, needs expertise of zoological sciences as students of this subject have a vast knowledge about biological pathways, structure and applications.

Zoology is just not limited to animal structure, but to every aspect of biology kingdom, like biochemistry and biophysics . Research labs and programmes , Pharma Industry, Biotech MNCs, Drug designing, Animal Welfare Programs, Colleges , Schools and Bioinformatics companies are some of major hiring enterprises of trainees from this field.

The origin of this stream dates back to the times of Greco-Roman empires where famous people like Aristotle made huge contributions in discovery and exploration of Animal life. Then during the Colonial rule , people like Harvey and Linnaeus made significant researches in this field. Zoology revolutionised with descent of Darwinian theories and further addition of Mendelian work. With improvisation in microscopy and technology , scientists like Morgan, Hunt, Crick and Franklin emerged with precise theories and practices related to Genome and Cell life.

When you pursue this subject , you train yourself for wet and dry lab skills and biological analysis . You shall get to know about evolution of life, Human Sciences , application of biology and its industrial approach. Precise measurements , cautiousness, data handling, communication and patience are some traits that students develop during this course.

Many famous personalities have done graduation or majors in this subject like-
Anurag Kashyap- bollywood filmmaker
Chris Morris-English writer and comedian
Kareena Kapoor- Wanted to pursue zoology before bollywood happened.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw- Owner, Biocon.

Anyone who wants to enter the field of research, or be an entrepreneur in the field of biology like pharma industry or biotechnology , looks out for the domain of life in space or microbiology or even enter corporate world in the related field like agriculture can opt for this course. If you have an awakening for life studies , their origin and cultivation then zoology hons is a right choice for you.

Zoology being a part of pure sciences can open doors for variety of sectors like-
Microbiology- studies about microbes
Virology-science about viruses
Marine biology-studies about marine life.
Biotechnology-using biology for developing technology
Bioinformatics-a biology and computer integrated course
Ethology- science about animal behaviour
Palaeontology-history of life.
Anthropology-studies of human beings.
Genetics- studies about DNA and more.
Proteomics- studies related to proteins.
Pharmacology- studies about drugs.
Systems biology-Studies about bio-pathways and structure
Astrobiology-science of extra-terrestrial life.
Agricultural studies- developing techniques to enhance cultivations.
Biochemistry- chemistry of biological sciences.
Biophysics- physical science of biology.
Medical technology-development of medical apparatus and applications.
Forestry and Wildlife Conservation
Television channels like Discovery and National geographic hire zoologists .
Forensics.
Zoo keeper and curators.
Lecturer in schools and colleges.
You can pursue your majors or PhD in the above courses and enter the similar working sectors.

For pursuing graduation or majors in zoology, following are the prioritised colleges-
1. Madras Christian College, Chennai
2. Miranda House, University of Delhi
3. Ramjas College, University of Delhi
4. Joseph’s College, Kerala

Course details-
Bsc Zoology hons- 3 year program
Msc Zoology hons- 2 year program

To study abroad , you have to clear IELTS, TOEFL, SAT OR GRE depending on what you want to pursue and which is your destination country.

Many universities abroad require good grade points in academics in college and school, co -curricular activities, social work , language proficiency and training related to your curriculum .

For studying post graduation in India, you may have to appear for entrance tests like those of IIT(IIT-JAM), AIIMS, TIFR etc.
In India the field of Zoology has a rising platform for people to gain experience in. Biology is a vast domain offering prospects in our country. The MNC culture is giving this a further boost . However due to lack of resources and innovation, India lags behind various other pioneers of this field like USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.
