Statement of Purpose or SOP as it is called is one of the primary requirements for admission in foreign universities or any conference you want enter specially outside India. Now, Statement of Purpose is very tricky kind of thing. The points you should remember while making a statement of purpose are:-
- It should be short and script.
- Do not amplify explaining unnecessary details.
- Do not use too much ornamental language remember you are here to convince the authorities to accept your application and not show off your knowledge and stock of words.
- As I said do not use ornamental words, at the same time do not repeat same words over and over again. It creates a sense of monotony.
In the introduction of the Statement of Purpose you should explain why do you want to apply for the specific subject you are applying for and how do you find it interesting and how’d you develop your interest for that specific subject. The introduction should also contain the name of the university you last attended.
Next you should mention your percentage in the last qualifying examination and in which subjects did you major. You could also mention here about your extra curricular achievements or if you have completed any internship or you have any experience in voluntary works in any of the Non Governmental Organizations.
Next you could explain how you are going to utilize the knowledge you have gained from this course. You also try to convince them why you are perfect for this course. Please remember do not focus on your percentage only. For example suppose you are applying to the University of Oxford, in that case you just cannot say that I have a 98% so please take me. You have to remember the others who are applying, that is your fellow applicants, they are also as bright student as you are, so you have to give them something that makes you unique not only your percentage.
Now this portion is a bit tricky. You have to write to them why have you selected the particular university you applied for. For example if you have applied for an MSc in Chemistry to Cambridge University. You have to write to them why Cambridge? There are so many other universities which gives the same degree. You could also google up some of the well known alumni of the university and mention their names claiming that you want to shine in life as they did. You could also google up some of the other summer, winter or online courses and you could tell them that apart from the main degree you are interested to take short side courses.
Last, in the conclusion visit the university website you have applied for go through the campus life. Highlight the good points. For example you could say that you are awestruck to see the medical facilities, or sports facilities of the universities or you could also say the various food courts within the campus grabbed your attention.
