Writing a literary essay just calls for thorough research on the topic. It is not very difficult if you are familiar to the topic of essay, following some simple strategies will help you to produce a good and a compact essay.
To write an essay you could start of your essay with a quote. For example if the topic of essay is ‘Children’s Literature’ you could google up what different authors and critics have said about Children’s Literature. I personally remember while writing my essay on Children’s Literature I had incorporated the quote by C.S. Lewis, he had said that Children’s Literature which is enjoyed by only children is not a good Children’s Literature. In this context let me also mention that if you are not sure about the exact quotation please do not insert a wrong quotation, as the reader will have a bad impression about you. You can though opt for a more intelligent method. If the quotation is long and you find it difficult to remember or if you are to sure about the exact words mentioned in the quotes for some other reason, you could just explain the quote in your own words.
The introduction of the essay should consist a brief background of the topic. For example if the given topic is crime fiction you have to mention the definition, when this genre started and since when did it start evolving. You could also mention the dates (years and the centuries) to make it more informative.
Then you can go on explain the sub genres if any. For example if the essay is on Fantasy Literature, you could go on mentioning the sub genres of fantasy literature which are high fantasy, low fantasy etc.
The next two paragraphs should include innumerable examples of the books of the genre on which the essay is being written. In this case it is important to note that only only names of the books will not be sufficient. In order to improve the quality of the essay you should include the name of the author as well as a brief summary of the examples of the books you have taken should also be mentioned. You could write about the eminent authors about the genre you are writing the essay on and in addition you could mention the film adaptations if the examples of the books you have taken has any.
Next, in the conclusion portion you have to mention that how the style and structure of writing changed from ages. These are the important ingredients of a good literary essay and the rest depends on the writing style and creativity of the writer, which is an individual effort and cannot be defined by someone else.
