Happiness ~ The key to a Good Life

Throughout their lives, people are constantly engaged in the quest for happiness. The central question that comes to mind is, how do we find happiness? And even if we've found it, how do we preserve it? It is generally believed that getting admission into your dream university, a good promotion at work, winning a lottery worth a million bucks and other such auspicious events in life bring happiness. But what about those who haven't achieved all this? Should we conclude that they are never happy?

We always assume that the grass is greener on the other side but in reality, it's all about perspectives. Maybe the one who didn't get admission in his dream university, got better opportunities elsewhere; maybe the one who never got a promotion at work realized that it wasn't his forté and tried for another one; maybe the one who didn't win the lottery learned to become self dependant and not rely on such shortcuts in life!

Happiness is not a destination, it is the path to it. Instead of doing what makes you happy, find happiness in whatever you do. In the circle of life where good as well as bad times are inevitable, the only thing that keeps us going is the CHOICE to be happy.

One can find happiness even in the smallest of things in life. When a small child holds your finger tightly with its little fist; the smell of books, old and new; eating mother's homemade food after eating tasteless hostel food for months; a reassuring smile from the person you look up to; the smell of fresh earth when it rains; watching our favourite movies on repeat; reminiscing childhood days with family & friends - don't these things give us a warm fuzzy feeling in our heart? Isn't that the happiness that we have been seeking all along?

We often wonder what the secret to a person's happiness is. More often than not, a person is happy not because of the right things in life, but because of the right ATTITUDE towards things in life. If we embrace each day as it comes, taking things positively, no one can stop us from achieving happiness. It is our choices that make us who we are and no one can make us happy unless we choose to do it ourselves. Life comes around only once and therefore we should strive to make the most of what comes our way and learn to let go of things that prevent us from being happy. Like Professor Dumbledore says: "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light!"
