Depression: Causes and cure

It would not be too far fetched to say that depression is even worse than death. Death kills you in one go. Slash! And it's over. Depression kills you slowly-over days, or months, or years. Depression empties you from the inside. You start losing interest in your self and your surroundings when you are depressed. Life seems hell and suicidal thoughts begin taking hold of your mind. 

Treatment of depression is not explicit as such. Though medication is available, most of the work is to be done mentally. However, before moving over to ways to cure depression, let us have a look on what are the factors that cause depression-

1. Death or Loss- The death of an individual you are close to, or any such great loss can become a cause of depression.
2. Abuse-Any past physical, mental or emotional abuse suffered by a person can cause depression in him/her in the future. 
3. Medication- Sometimes, some drugs can cause depression as a side effect. 
4. Genetic- Often, people have a family history of depression, which also becomes the reason behind depression in them
5. Conflict- Many a times, conflict between family members or in other close people can cause depression.
6. Major illnesses- Depression sometimes coexists with another major illness. 

If you are strong enough mentally, you will be easily able to fight off depression. Following are a few ways by which one can combat this illness-

1. Set up a daily regime. It happens in depression that each day melts into the next one. To avoid this, set up a daily routine. Get up and retire to bed at a fixed time every day. Avoid taking naps. 
2. Get out of your comfort zone. Do something new. Depression makes you see life as long and dreary episode of a boring daily. Instead, see life as an opportunity. Join a zumba class, or a course in handwriting analysis. Try cooking dishes you had not tried before. 
3. Take enough sleep. Though sleeplessness can be a major problem in depression, it is, after all, all about trying. Remove the things that might hinder your sleep-TV, computer etc. Take life easy and get some good sleep. 
4. Love yourself. People in depression start to feel them selves worthless. When any such thoughts come into your mind, search for facts that would support these negative thoughts. Of course, you would find none. Think about the positive traits of life. In time, you will be able to control such thoughts. 
5. Medication-Though medicines for curing depression are available, these should not be taken without consulting the doctor. 

Thus, though depression seems to be all dangerous, unavoidable and invincible, it actually is not so. Through firm determination and constant efforts, one can fight off this evil.
