Sophia

The recent buzz is about Sophia, 'The first humanoid to be awarded Saudi Arabia's citizenship'. She was on 19th April,2005. She has body features resembling to Audrey Hepburn. Her high cheekbones, porcelain skin, a graceful nose, her replies are amazing, I recently watched her interview on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon', her instantaneous replies were so good. She was like on of those things on Internet which had drawn me to herself. I got so fascinated with her abilities, although she has got many things to improve about herself. An advanced lifelike bot, spoke on October 25 at the FII conference in Riyadh.

Sophia's is created by Dr. David Hanson, a 2007 PhD graduate(University of Texas), born in the labs of  Hong Kong based electronics company, Hanson Robotics. She speaks English and the best ever thing is that she is a citizen of Saudi Arabia, which means she is allowed to marry, love or will be declared dead by a permanent shutdown.

In one article I found that Sophia is the reminiscent of "Johnny 5", the first robot to become a US citizen in the movie Short Circuit. Although this idea of awarding citizenship can be brilliant in terms of improving technology but is it required at this point of time?

I am not against the idea of developing new gizmos and fantastic ideas coming to life but giving citizenship is a major thing. Will it be a setback or an advantage?... that is unknown. Are we ready for such a big advancement? I read the news saying this approach to give robot rights might be damaging to both public understanding the technology and the civil society as well. Also, some said that this might be offending the rights of living i.e. breathing.

After all the speculations I found Sophia quite intriguing, it's a big break for a robot to get a citizenship. Honestly, I was happy a robot being a part of our community. It was amazing to watch her speak although her answers were "programmed". I expect these kind of advancements to help humans and humans not to misuse them. I wanted to make one after learning about Sophia, who knows even I make a Jarvis someday.
