HOW TO WRITE A FILM REVIEW

While writing a film review just like the book review it should be remembered that reviewing a film does not mean noting down the summary of the film. It is much more than that. A film review should consist of the entire head to toe of a film. A film review is the critical assessment of the film including factual and general information of the film. There are various formats of writing a film review but if no specific format is mentioned then one might follow the general format that is usually followed. The general format is described below. Unlike a book review a film review is a bit difficult to write. So be very careful while choosing a film because a good film review should contain all the minute details of the film.

The film review should begin in the following order :-
Title of the film
Director of the film
The introduction should contain the overall story of the film including the name of the film and director being mentioned again. The introduction should contain the paraphrase of the story because a reader should know the story and then only he or she will be able to take a critical approach about it. Otherwise the reader might find the analysis absolutely ridiculous and meaningless if he or she does not have any idea about the plot. Unnecessary details should be avoided and main storyline should be described.

Next the genre of the film should be described along with the causes that are highlighted in the film. The background, the setting, the names and features of major characters should be included. The minor characters who you feel is a major influence in the film can also be mentioned.

The next paragraph should include all the personal interpretations about the film. This paragraph should include the your own analysis and perceptions about the film. there are a lot of points which should be covered . The goal the film was trying to achieve should be discussed. Then the major points that could be included but were missed out could be discussed. If you feel any unnecessary scene was added to the film which was not relevant could also be discussed. In addition you could comment about the acting skills of the actors and pick up any dialogue from the film which you consider was powerful enough to touch the audience. You could also mention that the film has adult content or is a family easy-watch film (if you think this to be a controversial topic you can avoid it as well).

Then there are some details which a good film review should obviously have. These details if incorporated in a single paragraph could prove to be lengthy enough, so you could equally divide the details in to two equal paragraphs. These informations should include the name of the producer, casting of the film, name of the cinematographer if possible. The other minor details should include the budget of the film, the quality of camera used, was the film a blockbuster or a flop and you could also comment about the costume designing of the film.

In the conclusion portion you should compare the film with various other films of the same genre which you have seen and how were they different from the particular film which will make you film review more advanced and critical in nature.
