Note :- Before beginning my blog I would like to mention that through this blog my intention is never to demean the other cultures, but uplift my own culture and inform people about the rich legacy Bengal witnessed throughout centuries. It is through Bengalis that the first Nobel prize and the Oscar entered India. Not only in India but Rabindranath Tagore the composer of the national anthem of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to some extent (it is a rare information that the national anthem of Sri Lanka was first written in Bengali by Tagore and then it was translated to Tamil) was the first ever Asian to receive the Nobel prize. Satyajit Ray is the only Indian who has received an Honorary Academy Award and the first Indian versatile genius to receive Oscar. Both of them have also received prestigious honorary degree from the University of Oxford. Later Amartya Sen also received Nobel prize for his contribution in Economics.
Science enthusiasts surely heard of the name Satyendranath Bose. Einstein translated Bose's paper "Planck's Law and Hypothesis of Light Quanta" into German, and had it published in 'Zeitschrift fur Physik' under Bose's name, in 1924. When the great Einstein met him he asked Mr. Bose that if he was aware that he had invented a completely new kind of Statistics! Name of Bengali scientists such as Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose who proved plants have life and Manilal Bhaumik who invented laser are also worth mentioning.
The music industry would definitely be incomplete without the names such as S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar Ganguly, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chaudhury to this age Shreya Ghosal, Antara Mitra, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Pritam, Shantanu Moitra. Actors such as Rani Mukherjee, Bipasha Basu has also made their immense contribution to the film industry. Director Rituparno Ghosh the twelve times National Award Winner is also worth a mention.
Even in the field of modeling we have Sushmita sen not only winning the Miss Universe contest but also setting up life goals for every woman who wants to lead a carefree and independent life. The only cricketer to win four consecutive Man of the Match Awards in One Day International, Sourav Ganguly ( also set many other records) is one of the pride of Bengal.
Starting from Subrata Roy, Managing Worker and Chairman at Sahara India Pariwar who is arguably the richest Bengali in the world now to Abhik Sarkar the owner of ABP Group Bengalis have left their mark in the field of entrepreneurship also.
Bengal was always a part of controversy indeed! Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, isn’t he one of the most controversial characters of Indian National Movement?
Bengal has witnessed the first University to promote education in western style that is the University of Calcutta. Swami Vivekananda who is perhaps best known for his speech which began, "Sisters and brothers of America …," in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893 had mesmerized everyone out there. Bengal has also witnessed the best social reformers such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar etc. Surendranath Banerjee was not only the first Bengali but the first Indian to win a seat in the British Parliament, for his excellent oratory and convincing skills he was nicknamed as “ Mr. Surrender-not Banerjee” by his colleagues. There are many more as such.
From celebration of Durga puja to the celebration of talents, from celebration of intellect to celebration of delicacies, Bengal stands as the most enthusiastic competitor with various other cultures. Recently Respected Mamata Banerjee the Chief Minister of West Bengal also received international recognition for her unique Kanyashree scheme. Through this scheme girls from economically weak background are given financial help.
