Aren't we GRE busters?

🚶

GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a postgraduate test, students who have cleared their undergraduate studies and wants to opt for the examination for entry into Masters or PhD courses abroad, especially across universities in the USA and Canada, among others. Various foreign universities asks these scores and then proceed further for admission process. One can easily access the link

To ace exams like GRE ( or GMAT, CAT etc.) we need to decide between hardwork and smartwork. And of course, smart work is the way to go.
The very first thing one must do is try atleast 1 or 2 mock test paper(s) and analyse your performances and check whether you are struggling in quant or verbal the most.

  •  Just in case, you found difficulties in solving quant questions, here are some of the best strategies you could probably follow-

(1) Firstly, one need to realize that we are never asked exceptionally extraordinary questions in the paper instead critical thinking regarding the basics of our knowledge in Mathematics is asked in the exam. Hence start digging up your class 9–12 RD Sharma book and try to understand every questions instead of just solving them. Following this book leave greater impressions in your head and will be easy to learn as it was derived by none other than you. One must understand that there is no rigid syllabus for GRE and hence anything can come regarding basic maths. For this you can also go through some of these books -
1.Manhattan Test prep guide (Comment below if you want the PDFs)
2. Barron's GRE prep Guide
3. Official test guide of ETS

(2) Secondly, start blindly practicing books over and over again wont lead you anywhere instead you need to practice the right way. But before all this one must read the theoretical part of the Chapters as-well. Do clear your basics well and make them stronger ones. I repeat clear your basics, don't go for cramming work.

  • Now if you are struggling in the Verbal section, then you can improve that in the following ways-

Generally people think that learning 1000’s of words and just mugging up antonyms and synonym is the way to go, but the correct way is completely opposite of that. We need smart work ofcourse. So don't follow that approach.
For better enhanced vocabulary we must learn the roots of words and get to know how these words come to origin , this involves learning something between 300-500 roots of words and that is it. Once we are done with learning these roots we can easily learn more than 30 words per hour by simply breaking down the words into part and learning them. Now just learning these words and roots won’t lead us anywhere, the questions asked in our GRE tests are generally application based and we must learn the usage of these words in the most effective and efficient manner. To achieve this all we can do is read read and read.

In my view, one could easily learn new words in these effective ways -

  1.  Pickup reading material that excites you let it be newspaper, books, novels or whatever.
  2.  Mark the words that you find foreign and jot them down.
  3.  Try to identify the roots of the words.
  4.  Later try to find the meaning of these words on your own in terms of the context you read and literal meaning in dictionary.

Many books are available in the market for this very purpose but I would recommend you buying the book "Word power Made Easy by Norman Lewis " . This book provides passages as well as roots of words that will help you ace the GRE verbal section and master you vocabulary.

And many thanks to internet and smartphones.  Now you can download any app on your device that will fulfill your purpose of better vocabulary in the most effective manner (Comment below if you want list of such apps). You can access any relevant app on a go and will help you wherever you are and whatever small time you have.
Now, ALL THE VERY BEST FOR YOUR PREPARATIONS !
