A beginner's guide to table setting

Table setting is the arrangement of tableware on the dinner table.Table setting creates a spectacular dining table, enhances the visual beauty of food and contributes to the ambience.Even if you are not holding a fancy party at your house, table setting is important since it ensures good table manners.Table setting and dinner etiquettes are instrumental in earning respect, creating a positive image and progressing in social and professional spheres. They might be socially enforced rules but they will help you in developing a strong personality too since nobody likes a person with gross eating habits. An organised presentation of food will make you popular and help you in creating a long lasting impression on others. They can seem a bit confusing at first but as the famous proverb goes "practice makes perfect".Here are 8 tips for setting the table impeccably to allure your guests.

1. If you are not using silverware then choose china dishes.White china with minimal design is preferred since it allows the food to be the main highlight instead of the designs on the plate.Lace tablecloths bring fashion and elegance to your dinner table. The centerpices of your dinner table can include lantern candles, intricate candle sticks, floating candles, fresh and colourful flowers or beautiful leaves. If you are going for plants then keep them trimmed and if using candles then go for the unscented ones to keep the aroma of your food intact. The silverware should be placed one inch from the edge of the table.Remember to place only those utensils on the table which would be utilized during eating.

2. The dining experience is enriched by placing a beautifully folded linen napkin on the table. Some popular styles include the cone fold, the rosebud napkin fold and the folding a napkin using a beautiful napkin ring. You can also decorate the napkin with fresh flowers. You can place the napkin either on top of the service plate if it is being used in case of a formal dinner or on the center of the dinner plate in case of a casual dinner. The placement of the napkins for every plate on the table should be the same.

3. A service plate is a large plate that serves as the base plate for appetizers, salads and soups and sometimes even the main course. It is not used for eating but is a part of the table decor and is kept on the table till the dessert course is brought in.The dinner and salad plates are placed on top of the service plate.

4. The butter plate is placed above the forks to the left of the food plate and the butter knife is kept diagonally on it.

5. The forks are always placed on the left and the spoons and the knife on the right side of your dinner plate. The blade of the knife should be placed facing towards the plate. The dinner fork is placed to the left of the plate.  The arrangement of the other forks such as the salad fork, fish fork or fruit fork should be on the left or right of the dinner fork according to use. The oyester fork is placed far right of the spoons.

6. The teaspoon should be placed right next to the knife and the soup spoon to it's right.

7. The glasses are placed directly above the knives and spoons. The water glass should be placed closest to the food plate. The red wine and white wine glasses and the champagne flutes should be placed to it's right. The glasses used for a particular course are removed from the table after the course is complete.Use the same type of glasses for both red and white wine.

8. Dessert utensils should be brought in only when dessert is served. The dessert fork is placed on the left and the dessert spoon or knife is placed on the right side of your plate.
