The severity of smog in Delhi has engulfed the city for a week. Recently, the pollution levels in Delhi were very high which panicked the citizens and called for immediate action from the government. The Central Pollution Control Board recorded "severe" air quality, meaning that the intensity of pollution was extreme. The cause behind it was moisture in the air with absence of wind led to this situation. The moisture has trapped emissions from ground level sources. The National Green Tribunal had slammed all the construction activities in the city for three days looking at severity of the pollution.
Air pollution is a major environmental health problem affecting everyone. It occurs when the environment is contaminated by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. Air pollution, in and outside of people's homes, is the world's single largest environmental health risk. In India, the major sources of air pollution in homes are tobacco smoke and the smoke from solid fuels with efficient and leaky cooking stoves. It is blamed that current problem of air pollution is caused by stubble burning but it is obvious that this alone cannot be responsible when we already suffer due to uncontrolled industrial emissions, vehicular pollution and overall disturbed ecological system.
Air Quality Monitoring is an important part of the air quality management. The National Air Monitoring Programme has been established with objectives to determine the present air quality status and trends and to control and to regulate pollution from industries and other source to meet the air quality standards. The NGT has has also directed that there should be sprinkling of water wherever the PM 10 is found in excess of 600,there should be regular cleaning of roads after sprinkling so that the particulate matter doesn't rise again, conducting environmental auditing, using of personal vehicles only when necessary, help in increasing green cover, maintaining automobiles properly and adhering to emission control standards etc. are some of the ways through which air pollution can be controlled.
