Indian Premiere League commonly abbreviated, as IPL is a
T-20 Cricket League that started in the year 2007 by the Board of Cricket
Control of India (BCCI). Its first season commenced on 18 April 2008 and
concluded on 1 June 2008. It is one of the top leagues in the world and records
the highest viewership in India. IPL is believed to be the brainchild of Mr.
Lalit Modi- the founder and former commissioner of the league. The format
of the league is a Double Round Robin and Playoffs.
Tournament
Format:
Currently, with eight teams, each team plays each other
twice in a home-and-away in a round-robin format in the league phase. At
the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams will qualify for the
playoffs. The top two teams from the league phase will play against each other
in the first Qualifying match; called First
Qualifier, with the winner going straight to the IPL final and the loser getting another chance to qualify for the IPL
final by playing the second Qualifying match also known as the Second Qualifier. Meanwhile, the third
and fourth place teams from league phase play against each other in an Eliminator match and the winner from
that match will play the loser from the First
Qualifier. The winner of the Second
Qualifier moves to play the IPL Final
with the winner of the First Qualifier,
where the winner will be crowned as the champion of the Indian Premier League.
Awards:
The winner of the league is awarded with a prize money of ₹15
crore (as of season 10) and the runner up team is awarded ₹ 10 crore (as
of season 10) and a trophy each.
Orange Cap:
The
player who scores most number of runs during the league is awarded an Orange Cap award with prize money of ₹
10 lakh and a trophy. Current holder of the Orange Cap award is Australian
batsman David Warner who plays for
Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL.
Purple Cap:
The
player who takes most wickets during the league is awarded a Purple Cap award with prize money of ₹
10 lakh and a trophy. Current holder of the award is Indian swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar who plays for
Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL.
History
of Champions:

The current champions of IPL are the Mumbai Indians team captained by Indian batsman ‘Rohit Sharma’. Mumbai
Indians is also the most successful team of the league. It has won three
titles so far in the years 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Two teams Chennai Super
Kings & Kolkata Knight Riders have
won the title twice.
·
Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers
and Sunrisers Hyderabad has won the title once.

Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural season of IPL.
·
Chennai Super Kings is the only team to be able to defend
its title so far in the league. They won it in the year 2010 and defended it in
2011.
