She stood in front of the mirror, staring at the red dash that was slashed across her face, through the left eye. Running her finger over it, she cursed the monster who had inflicted that scar upon her pale face. This was the third time in that month. In that month, and that was pretty below the record. The last time he had beaten her, she had fell on the ground and had remained unconscious for one and a half hours. Nobody bothered to care for or think about her. This was the hell of a place she had landed into. She got up the earliest, went to bed the latest, did all the household chores perfectly, gave the right medicine to the right person at the right time, cooked food for all of them. And in return, got these scars and many uncaring, rude and cruel words. The helplessness of her present and the hopelessness of her future made her feel crestfallen as her big, almond shaped eyes welled up with fresh tears.
This is perhaps the story of every other woman in our country. Domestic violence, it seems, has made its way to the social sphere of the Indian society. Even people like celebrities, politicians who look very influential from outside, are or have been a victim of this evil. So how to combat it?
In my opinion, independence of women, in all aspects, can prove to be helpful to curb this cruelty. A man can exert his power over women when he has the knowledge that she is dependent on him in some or the other way-physically, financially or emotionally.
If we make our daughters independent in all respects, completely self sufficient, such cases of domestic violence will definitely reduce. We should teach our daughters to love them selves and be happy with what they are. They don't have to be dependent on their husbands for their joy. Secondly, we should make them physically independent. We should teach them that the only thing that remains with them when everything else goes away is their hard work. So their work should be their priority over people. Thirdly, and most importantly, we should teach them and make them financially independent so that she does not has to get beaten every time she wants to buy something. In my opinion, following these steps can threaten the existence of social evils in our society.
