The growing population has
immensely increased the scene of traffic on roads in India. Even though public
transport and carpools have always been an option for a bulk of everyday
working population, they are somehow inadequate when it comes to time saving and
personal convenience. Thus, it has become a necessity for people (specially the
urban dwellers) to switch to their personal mode of transport. However, to
legally pursue the same, one needs to have a DRIVING LICENSE.
Here are the
guidelines enabling one to acquire a driving license:
· Eligibility :
Ø
Two
wheelers without gear - applicant must be
atleast 16 years of age and must have guardian’s consent.
Ø
Two wheelers with gear - applicant must be atleast 18
years of age or above
Ø
Four wheelers - applicant must be atleast 18
years of age (20 years in some states) or above.
NOTE: Applicant must possess all valid documents required in all the cases
.
· Documents required :
For obtaining a driving license the applicant must
submit the following documents (in the RTO or upload them on “SARATHI” website as directed by THE ROAD
TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAY MINISTRY in case of online submission)
Ø
A completely filled application form.
Ø
A passport size photograph ( 6 for learners
license )
Ø
Current address proof
Ø
A copy of a recent bill (e.g. Electricity bill )
Ø
Medical certificate from a certified government
doctor
Ø
ID proof : Aadhar / voters ID / Ration card /
Passport

· Procedure for online application :
The process for filling for an application form to obtain a
driving license is given below:
Ø
Log on to “ SARATHI ” website of the Road
Transport and Highway Ministry and download the application form
Ø
Fill in the necessary details and submit.
Ø
For learners license a hardcopy of the form has
to taken out and signed by the guardian at the RTO.
Ø
Upload the necessary documents (as mentioned
above) and a web application number will be generated soon after their
submission.
Ø
An SMS will be sent confirming your application
being received.
Ø
SMS contains the details of your booked slot for
the required driving license test.
· Procedure for offline application :
Apart from the inconvenience of standing in long queues
the procedure for filling an offline application for attainment of a driving
license is very simple. The steps are given below:
Ø
The applicant has to procure an application form
from the nearest RTO and duly fill it with all the necessary details.
Ø
The applicant then has to submit all the
necessary documents.
Ø
The application form along with the documents
has to be submitted at the RTO in the jurisdiction in which he / she lives.
Ø
The slot is booked for the driving license test.
· Driving license test :
For taking up the driving test the following procedure
has to be followed:
Ø Submit all the relevant documents and the slot
booking slip at the designated counter.
Ø
Pay the fees for taking up the test and get the receipt.
Ø
Approach the allotted track cabin on time and
give the test.
Ø If the test is cleared at once, your license is
awarded to you there and then or else mailed to your address.
