How to develop the habit of reading

Books are wondrous belongings. Not only do they help us travel in time but they also help us escape into an entirely different world altogether; such is their magic! Reading is the finest addiction an individual can ever have. Yet, in this era not many people essentially have the habit of reading. The number of avid readers has reduced to a bare minimum. The non-readers haven’t the slightest of an idea of what marvellous worlds they are missing out on. Also, there is a certain segment of this acutely time-starved society, which ardently wishes to develop this habit, but does not know where to begin. What they do not know is that the process to develop this habit is fairly simple and extremely rewarding.

Here are a few steps and hacks to follow to develop this amazing habit:
·      First and foremost: select books which will keep you engaged. There are some genres which are perfect for this. Crime and thriller are perfect for this. They are sure to keep the reader intrigued and hence hooked onto the book till the very end.

·        Set short goals: start with setting a small goal of reading for 10 to 30 minutes each day. This is the step which most of the beginners get wrong. The beginners often tend to set goals of completing as much as 100 pages a day which is too ambitious for someone new.

·        Read in an isolated place: too much noise or reading around friends and acquaintances is bound to distract a person trying to read. Hence, a beginner should start reading in isolation. For example, they could read in their rooms or libraries or gardens.

·      Keep a log: this not only gives a sense of accomplishment but also motivates the person to read furthermore.

·      Visit bookshops or join a library: Book stores are the ultimate source of temptation for every reader. Visiting and spending time in book stores can help the person to discover different genres and help interact with a lot of available information. If on a fixed budget, library is the best option. It is not only the best place to acquire knowledge, but also provides an ideal environment promoting the habit.

·      Write small reviews:  the person should essentially pen down their thoughts and reviews of the book. This will help them analyse and comprehend the whole purpose of reading. Also, it will help a beginner discover their genre of interest.

·     Talk to other readers: there wouldn’t be one reader on this planet who would not like to share their thoughts and ideas on certain books and authors. They are certainly the best inspirations and not only that; they are also the best people to take recommendations from.

·     Always carry a book: it is ideal to always have a book with oneself. That way, it is easier to remain inspired.

·      Have a reading hour or reading day: It would be a unique and beneficial practice switching off electronic devices for an hour at night and call it a ‘reading hour’ where all their family members read each night. Or one could do a reading day, when you read for practically the whole day.
